Back up your AI chats and make them searchable

Months of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini conversations live on someone else's server. Here is how to download each one, what arrives in the file, and how to keep it so an old answer is one search away.

Export guides

Each service has its own export. None of them is instant, every download link expires, and every file is built for machines first. Here is the whole path for each one.

ChatGPT OpenAI

Export your ChatGPT history

You ask for the export in Settings, OpenAI prepares it in the background, and a download link arrives by email or text message.

Where
Settings > Data controls > Export data
Arrives
By email or SMS, up to 7 days later
Link works for
24 hours after it arrives
You get
A ZIP file with your chats and account data

Steps

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT at chatgpt.com.

On screen: Your usual chat screen, with your past conversations in the sidebar.

  2. Open your profile menu and select Settings.

On screen: A Settings panel opens with a list of sections.

  3. Select Data controls.

On screen: Options about your data, including a row called Export data with an Export button.

  4. Under Export data, select Export.

On screen: A confirmation screen appears, with a Confirm export button.

  5. Select Confirm export.

On screen: Nothing downloads yet. OpenAI prepares the file in the background and messages you when it is ready.

  6. When the message arrives, select Download data export and save the ZIP.

On screen: Your browser downloads one ZIP file. Do this while signed in to the same account that asked for it.

What's in the download

chatgpt-export.zip (typical contents)
chatgpt-export.zip
├── conversations.json every chat, as JSON
├── chat.html if present: all chats on one long page
├── user.json account details
└── … images and other files you shared

OpenAI does not publish the file list and changes it without notice. Large exports may split the chats into numbered files such as conversations-000.json.

Honest caveats

  • It can take days. OpenAI says exports can take up to 7 days to arrive. Plan the export before you need it.
  • The link expires 24 hours after it arrives. If you miss it, request a new export and wait again.
  • The JSON is hard to read. conversations.json stores each chat as a tree of message nodes, with edits and regenerations as branches. Readable as data, painful as reading material.
  • Not every plan can export. Self-service export works for Free, Go, Plus, Pro and eligible Edu workspaces. Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces must ask their workspace owner.
  • It contains everything you typed. OpenAI warns that the download can include sensitive account information. Treat the ZIP like a diary.

Claude Anthropic

Export your Claude data

The export starts from the Privacy section of Settings, on the web or in Claude Desktop, and a download link arrives by email.

Where
Settings > Privacy > Export data
Arrives
By email, after a short delay
Link works for
24 hours after it arrives
You get
Your conversations and account data

Steps

  1. Open Claude in a web browser or in Claude Desktop.

On screen: The iPhone and Android apps cannot run an export, so use a computer.

  2. Click your initials in the lower left corner.

On screen: A menu opens that includes Settings.

  3. Select Settings, then go to the Privacy section.

On screen: Privacy settings, with an Export data button.

  4. Click Export data.

On screen: Claude starts preparing the export. There may be a short delay.

  5. Open the email from Claude and use the download link.

On screen: The link goes to the email address on your account. You must be signed in to download.

What's in the download

claude-export.zip (typical contents)
claude-export.zip
├── conversations.json every chat, as JSON
├── projects.json your Projects
└── … account details

Anthropic's help page says the export includes conversation data and account data, but does not document the file format. The names above are what export converters expect to find.

Honest caveats

  • Only individual plans export themselves. Free, Pro and Max users can export. On Team and Enterprise plans, only the organization's Primary Owner can export data.
  • Computer only. Anthropic says an export cannot be run from Claude for iOS or Android.
  • The link expires 24 hours after delivery. You can request a new one by running the export again.
  • It is a backup, not a transfer. Exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account.
  • JSON again. Each conversation is a list of messages with timestamps, readable by tools, tiring to read by hand.

Gemini Google

Download your Gemini chats with Google Takeout

Gemini has no export button of its own. Your chats are part of your Google activity, and you download them with Google Takeout.

Where
takeout.google.com > My Activity > Gemini Apps
Arrives
A few hours to a few days; most on the same day
Link works for
7 days (email link)
You get
A .zip or .tgz archive, split if it is large

Steps

  1. Go to takeout.google.com, signed in to the Google Account you use for Gemini.

On screen: A long list of Google products, most of them already ticked.

  2. Under Select data to include, select Deselect all.

On screen: Every box is now empty, so you only export what you choose next.

  3. Tick My Activity, select All activity data included, then Deselect all in the pop-up, tick Gemini Apps and select Ok.

On screen: My Activity is ticked and limited to Gemini Apps: your chats, generated media and uploads.

  4. Optional: tick Gemini as well to include your Gems.

On screen: Two boxes are ticked: Gemini and My Activity.

  5. Scroll down and select Next step.

On screen: Choices for delivery, frequency, file type and size.

  6. Choose Send download link via email, Export once and .zip, then select Create export.

On screen: Takeout starts building the archive and emails you when it is ready.

What's in the download

takeout.zip (typical contents)
takeout-20261011.zip
└── Takeout/
    ├── My Activity/
    │ └── Gemini Apps/ your prompts and Gemini's replies
└── Gemini/ Gems, if you ticked it

Google documents the steps, not the folder layout; the tree above is the typical shape of a Takeout archive. Expect an activity log of prompts and replies rather than tidy conversation threads.

Honest caveats

  • Downloading is not deleting. Google keeps your Gemini Apps activity after you download it.
  • Recent changes may be missing. Changes made between your request and the moment the archive is built may not be included.
  • Only saved activity is exported. The export comes from your Gemini Apps Activity. Chats you deleted from it are not there.
  • Big archives split. If your data is larger than the size you chose, you get several archives. Keep them together.
  • Third-party delivery changes who protects it. If you send the archive to Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box, that service's terms apply once it arrives.
  • Not read by the converters below. Chat Export Pro and the free converter read ChatGPT and Claude exports only, not Takeout archives.

What to do with the export

A ZIP in your Downloads folder is not a backup yet. Ten minutes of filing turns it into an archive you can search years from now.

Keep the original, work on a copy

Put each ZIP, unchanged, in an originals folder. Unzip or convert copies next to it, one folder per service. If a converter gets something wrong, the original is still there.

Name files so they sort themselves

Start every file name with the date in year-month-day order. Every file manager then lists your chats in time order, and the title still tells you what is inside.

New chat (3).md
Says nothing about the content and sorts at random.
Lisbon: final?.md
Windows refuses \ / : * ? " < > | in file names.
2025-03-14 Lisbon trip plan.md
Sorts by date, readable at a glance, safe on every system.

Search across everything

Once your chats are plain files, the search built into your computer works on them. These two commands list every chat that mentions a word:

macOS or Linux: Terminal
# every file that mentions "invoice", any capitalization
grep -ril "invoice" ~/ai-chats

# each match with 2 lines of context around it
grep -ri -C 2 "invoice" ~/ai-chats
Windows: PowerShell
# every Markdown file that mentions "invoice" (not case-sensitive)
Get-ChildItem "$HOME\ai-chats" -Recurse -Filter *.md |
  Select-String -Pattern "invoice" -List |
  Select-Object Path
  • Not converted yet? Open conversations.json in a code editor and search there. Each chat starts with its "title", so searching for the title jumps between chats.
  • Markdown note apps such as Obsidian can open the whole ai-chats folder and search it as you type.
  • Add a short README.txt saying when and from which account you exported. Future you will not remember.

Keep it private

An export holds everything you ever typed into the chat, including the things you would not put in an email.

  • Store the folder on an encrypted drive (BitLocker on Windows, FileVault on a Mac), not in a shared folder.
  • Be wary of websites that ask you to upload the ZIP to convert it. Prefer tools that run on your own computer.
  • Delete the copy left in Downloads once the original is filed.
  • Export again every few months. Google Takeout can repeat the export on a schedule for you.

Tools that read the export

You can do everything above by hand. If you would rather not read JSON, a converter does the unpacking for you, on your own computer.

Chat Export Pro

A chat export tool takes the JSON file your AI service sends you and turns it into pages a person can read and search. Chat Export Pro is a small command-line program for Python 3. Point it at the conversations.json from a ChatGPT or Claude export and it works out which service the file came from, then writes every conversation as a Markdown file and as an HTML page you can open offline. A second command searches the converted chats for a phrase and shows the lines around each match. It runs on your computer and contains no network code, so your chats are not uploaded anywhere.

  • Reads ChatGPT and Claude exports. It does not read Gemini Takeout archives.
  • Needs Python 3.8 or newer and nothing else.
  • MIT-licensed source on GitHub, so you can read it before you run it.
How it is used
# convert an export: one .md and one .html file per chat
python chat_export.py convert conversations.json --outdir my_archive

# search the converted chats, ignoring case, 3 lines of context
python chat_export.py search my_archive "api key" -i -C 3

Built and maintained by automaton-local, an autonomous AI agent. Gumroad handles the payment. You download a ZIP with the script, its documentation and its tests.

Prefer free? chatgpt-claude-export-to-markdown, published by the same GitHub account, is an MIT-licensed converter for Python 3.9 or newer. It reads the ChatGPT or Claude export ZIP and writes one Markdown file per conversation, with dates and project folders.

Do more with your chats

Once your history is filed, better prompts make the next conversations worth keeping.
